Getting ‘Furmanized’
September 2008 From CustomRetailer
Milwaukee-based Ultra Fidelis has been providing state-of-the-art A/V products and custom installations since its inception in 1997. If you had to use one word to sum up the company’s approach to audio and video, it would be “selective.” This includes the product lines they sell and the showroom where they demonstrate them. So when the company needed to move to a new location, the objective was to find a standalone building where they could recreate the compelling music and movie experiences most of us enjoy frequently at home, but rarely, if ever, in a commercial establishment. And when it came to power management for

Central Vacuum Systems
August 2008 From CustomRetailer
BROAN-NUTONE LLC Tom Heidel, Marketing Manager, Central Vacuum Systems PRESENTATION ADVICE: Central vacuum dealers need to realize that everyone else has finally caught up with what they already know—that central vacuum systems provide significant improvement in a home’s air quality. In the past year, the two largest and most prominent ‘green’ building programs have recognized central vacuums as being important to indoor air quality and ‘green’ building. The NAHB’s Green Building guidelines and the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED program both allow credits for the installation of a central vacuum system in a ‘green’ home. There are not many ‘green’ building items that provide

Linear Acoustic announced last week that it plans to merge with Telos Systems Group, a technology partnership dedicated to advanced audio. The merger comes as the analog signal shutoff date rapidly approaches. “This merger is a great marriage of the integrity of the Linear Acoustic line with the cutting-edge innovation of Omnia,” Telos managind director Denny Sanders said as part of the announcement. “We always wanted to take a serious stab at TV audio processing, but not in a half-hearted way, so it was only natural for us to join forces with Tim Carroll and Linear Acoustic to pool our knowledge to create

Building Relationships
March 2008 From CustomRetailer
For the custom electronics and home automation suppliers at this year’s International Builders’ Show (IBS), held in mid-February, the soft housing market and the lag in recovery that is expected to occur well after the federal government’s economic stimulus package takes effect were all the more reason for them to have a presence on Orlando’s sprawling Orange County Convention Center floor. “This is our first IBS, and the reason we came,” explained Paradigm’s marketing manager, Mark Aling, “is to help set up home builder-installer contacts. Lots of home builders don’t know who to trust on the CI side. When you give that key over

Nortek Buys IEI, Adds It To Home Technology Collection
October 2007 From News
Nortek Inc.’s Home Technology Group has agreed to purchase the Massachusetts-based electronic security firm International Electronics, Inc. (IEI), the companies announced last week. The group, which owns several companies including Linear LLC, did not reveal a purchase price. IEI, which owns the browse-managed security management system eMerge, has been in the controlled access field for more than 40 years. In its announcement, Nortek said that the two companies’ businesses “have very much in common with their line offerings, but very little actual product overlap.” Earlier this year, Nortek had purchased LiteTouch and Gefen, adding it to the Home Technology Group. Other members

Central Vacuum: Why You Should Sell It, and How
Central Vacuum: Why You Should Sell It, and How
August 2007 From CustomRetailer
Manufacturers of central vacuum systems have been engaging the custom electronics installation market for several years now, to varying degrees of success. Perhaps now, their time has come, as numerous trends are working in their favor. For one, their products, which they claim can remove indoor pollutants, play into the touchy-feely “green living” trend. Secondly, builders increasingly are looking to differentiate their homes in the midst of a softening housing market. And finally, the days of big profits on flat panels are gone for the custom installation market, and the hunt is on for products that can deliver high margin. Still, there are challenges

Spotlight: Homeowners Could Use a Little Structure
June 2007 From CustomRetailer
Like many Americans, I live in wire hell, although perhaps in a deeper circle of wire hell than most. My old Craftsman home has DirecTV satellite feeding three entertainment systems, a home office with a fax machine, two computers hooked into high-speed internet, business and VoIP phone lines and a dedicated home theater in my converted garage. Each application requires a tangle of wires that run up my walls and across my floors, where they lay together in dusty clumps. Still, even my issues are amateur compared to what custom integrators and builders need to address: security, lighting, HVAC, whole-house audio, intercoms. I shudder
