Windows Everywhere
January 2008 From CustomRetailer
There aren’t many advantages in this business when you’re young. No experience. No cadre of current customers to market to. And you’re just beginning to make the mistakes most of your competition has already committed and learned from. But there’s one distinct advantage Tyler Jennings and his team of fellow twentysomethings at Imperium Smart Systems in Herriman, Utah, have: Starting from a clean slate, the group can adopt the latest technology earlier than anyone else, and install it quickly. This fall, the company was rewarded for its ingenuity, winning the Windows Media Center Ultimate Install Competition. Announced at the 2007 CEDIA EXPO, the

The Feedback Loop
November 2007 From CustomRetailer
Having changed her driving habits by watching the digital fuel consumption gauge on her Prius’ dashboard, Jackie O’Neil wanted a similar feedback system for her LEED Gold-rated, zero net energy home. And the home automation and control industry is close to providing just that. A former corporate exec who educated herself to be a developer of energy-efficient homes, O’Neil built two zero net energy homes—one for herself, the other for her sister—near Perkiomenville in southeastern Pennsylvania. With grants to help off-set the cost of the $40,000 photo voltaic system that supplies the home’s energy, the first home was built for $167 per square foot;

Evolving Priorities
October 2007 From CustomRetailer
What happened to audio and video? I’ve been back from this year’s CEDIA EXPO for about a week now, enough time to go through my notes (sloppy) and piles of press kits and materials (heavy) to draw a few conclusions and questions on the trends evident from the show. What stuck out most to me there, and my study of the press materials and course/seminars confirms, is that audio and video seem to be taking a back seat to control and automation. Look back at a CEDIA show a few years ago and you’ll still see the biggest booths and biggest buzz around

“Technomenities”: The Pleasure-Tronics Trend at CEDIA ‘07
September 2007 From News
Custom installer Thomas Springler, owner of Audio Video Design Group, flew from Bergen County, NJ, to Denver to walk the CEDIA showfloor for one overarching reason, he says: “I’m always looking for something to make life easier.” What Springler found at this year’s CEDIA conference was a manufacturing culture that’s not only ready to offer his customers practical, energy-saving or time-saving home control products, but one that’s becoming increasingly creative about linking customers to every pleasure in their neighborhood, all electronically. Springler’s MDU customers, those living in condos or high-rise Manhattan apartment buildings, have the best chance of ordering up “technomenities”

Life|ware Unveils New Media Center Servers, Microsoft Shows UP
September 2007 From News
Since losing major marketing support from Hewlett-Packard earlier this year, Exceptional Innovation, the developer of the Life|ware home control and automation platform, has moved more into the hardware side and has formed closer relationships with Microsoft and other manufacturers. CEDIA Expo 2007, held this week in Denver, also marks the first time Microsoft has established a direct presence at the show. In the past, CEDIA members slammed Microsoft for its lack of direct support, despite the growing acceptance of Media Center-based PC as part of the home network and entertainment environment. “Our software and hardware alliances in the CEDIA market

Lifeware Maker Exceptional Innovation Decides to Offer Its Own Media Center Hardware
Lifeware Maker Exceptional Innovation Decides to Offer Its Own Media Center Hardware
May 2007 From News
When HP dropped its A/V component-like Digital Entertainment Center (DEC) line of Windows Media Centers this spring, questions arose for Exceptional Innovation (EI), maker of the Lifeware Windows Vista-based home automation platform. Specifically, considering HP was EI’s most prominent hardware partner, would the software manufacturer rely on another top-tier vendor like Sony to fill the Media Center gap HP left, or would it take a major leap by developing and marketing its own line of Media Centers? With today’s announcement of its Lifemedia servers, EI has definitively answered the second part of that question. EI’s Lifemedia servers will be available this summer, with prices starting

April 2007 From News
As HP’s Digital Entertainment Center exits the living room, Exceptional Innovation (EI) is inviting other manufacturers’ A/V component-like Media Center PCs over to hang out with its Lifeware home entertainment and automation software—but not without a few words about its most prominent marketing ally’s disappointing departure. HP recently—and without a formal announcement—discontinued its line of Digital Entertainment Centers (DECs). Those Media Center PCs were designed to look like A/V components, leading to their description as “living room form factor” Media Centers. HP had been offering DECs for a couple of years, and the HP logo and the DECs themselves had been prominently featured in
