Optoma Launches New Projector Lines
November 2007
From News
Optoma has begun shipping its fully refreshed line of projectors, which all feature greater brightness, clarity and enhanced color at lower prices points than last year. The increased brightness also enables several of the projectors to be used for commercial and home use, something that could make front projection sales a bit easier for retailers. The 10 new platforms include the EP1691 and EP7155 3.2 pound ultra-portables; the EP721, EP727 and EP728 multimedia data series; the 6.3-pound EP761 with 3200 lumens and 2000:1 ratio; and the new 720p HD65 and HD71 high-definition home theater projectors. “One of the big trends we see
At Home in the Commercial District

At InfoComm 2007—held this year at the Anaheim (Calif.) Convention Center—my mission was to cull the residential news from this largely commercial A/V and information systems show. Amid the A/V switchers with mind-boggling numbers of connections and the 10,000-lumen projectors that would scorch the retinas of home users, I discovered a few new finds ideal for the custom installer. Audio for the residential market was virtually nonexistent, so I focused on video. Projectors Among the mammoth commercial projectors with crazy brightness, a few new home theater projectors were on hand. I saw three distinct trends in the category: “inexpensive,” 1,080p, and models with Texas
Optoma Aims for Best of Both Channel-Worlds with 1,080p Projector Pair

From News
Optoma said its second and third 1,080p DLP front projectors, which follow its first such model’s debut nine months ago, won’t be seen together much: one is targeted squarely at mass retail and internet sales, while the other is geared for the custom installation channel. The mass-market product is the single-chassis HD80, a sub-$3,000 projector. The custom-targeted projector is the $8,000, two-piece HD81-LV system; it’s available with an optional anamorphic lens solution (BX-133AM) at a package price of $12,000. “We see the need to have new technologies come in at the upper end so that we can push into new markets and applications, and we also

Display industry research firm Pacific Media Associates reported that Mitsubishi, Epson, and Optoma emerged as the top front projector brands in its 11th Annual Dealer Survey. “The market for front projectors is more competitive than ever,” said Michael Abramson, director of front projector research for Pacific Media and project manager for the Dealer Survey. “Most dealers carry multiple product lines, so manufacturers have to do more than just make good products. They must provide compelling sales, marketing and technical support programs if they are to capture a dealer’s mindshare and market share.” The methodology of the survey, which polled 144 North American dealers, is
HDTV Goes Green? ISF Says Its Calibration Techniques Can Help Reduce Energy Consumption
March 2007
From News
The Imaging Science Foundation (ISF), which trains and certifies installers and licenses manufacturers worldwide on professional video calibration, claimed last week that “the quest for superior HDTV picture quality has a fringe benefit: 30 to 50 percent energy savings.” ISF previously reckoned that figure to be only five to 10 percent. However, by working with energy efficiency consultants ECOS Consulting through a research grant from the California Energy Commission, ISF has been deploying “lab-grade power consumption instrumentation to research how HDTV settings impact energy consumption.” Its findings include the following: • “A well-designed Sony LCD used for ISF’s Microsoft Media Center certification program had 100 percent superior

Like most video categories, price/margin compression is the biggest challenge. Several manufacturers are trying to win market share by driving price down without getting the kind of uptick in sales volume necessary to be profitable. At this year's show, the lines between the commercial and consumer A/V markets continued to blur By Grant Clauser Commercial is going residential; residential is going commercial. The line between the two is becoming less well-defined as display and distribution systems for both markets begin to look more alike than not. That blending of technologies and markets (as well as installers) was a common theme at this year's InfoComm Expo, held by the International Communications Industries Association (ICIA) in Las Vegas last month. Both attendance and exhibitor numbers were up this year, with more than 25,000 attendees and 725 exhibitors. Tech Trends Industry watchers
