Pioneer to Release KURO Plasmas

Pioneer Electronics this week announced the release of its latest line of plasma TVs, under the Pioneer Kuro and Elite Kuro brand names. The sets, both coming in 42- and 50-inch denominations, are distinguished by their high “black levels”; “kuro” means “black” in Japanese.
The 50-inch PDP-5080HD Pioneer Kuro, with a 1365 x 768 resolution and four HDMI in-puts, retails for $3,500. The 42-inch PDP-4280HD, with a 1024x768 resolution, goes for $2,700. On the Elite Kuro line, the 50-inch, PRO-1150HD edition carries a suggested retail price of $4,500, while the 42-inch Kuro, the PRO-950 HD, sells for $3,200.
The TVs shipped this week, Pioneer said. The company will also release 50- and 60-inch 1080p sets this fall.
